What aligners are and how they work

An aligner is a thin, clear tray that fits tightly over your teeth. Treatment is a series of these trays. Each one is slightly different from the last and moves the teeth a very small amount. As you go from one tray to the next, your teeth move step by step to the position we planned.

Everything starts with a 3D scan, with no impressions. Deckoff Dental was among the first clinics in Sofia to work with a scanner. From the scan we make the treatment plan and show you how your teeth will move and where they will end up. So you see the final result before we start.

Aligners are worn about 22 hours a day. You take them out only to eat and to brush your teeth. Every week you move on to the next aligner, and children under 12 every 5 days. The less you wear them, the slower the teeth move and the longer treatment takes.

Invisalign aligners and Angel aligners

Both systems treat the same problems. The differences are in the tray material, some technical details, the price and how long we have been working with each of them.

Invisalign aligners

Invisalign aligners are the better known of the two brands. Dr Deckoff has worked with them since 2019, and most of his completed cases were treated with Invisalign aligners. The trays are made of SmartTrack, a material the brand developed specifically for aligners. It is elastic, fits tightly and presses on the teeth gently and evenly, so the trays are easy to put in and take out. For children there is a separate line, Invisalign First aligners.

Angel aligners

Angel aligners are the more innovative and more affordable of the two systems. We have used them at the clinic since 2025. The trays have built-in buttons for elastics, for treatments that need elastics. Angel aligners come in two versions made of different materials: standard and PRO. PRO is for cases with large tooth movements, when the whole bite has to shift. The trays are made of a soft multi-layer material that, according to the manufacturer, stays clear for longer and resists staining. For children there are Angel KiD aligners.

The price depends on how complex the case is, how many aligners are needed and whether one jaw or both are treated. The table shows the packages our patients choose most often.

What the price includes. The consultation is €35. At the moment, if you wish, we also do the 3D scan and the treatment plan at the consultation at no extra cost. Many clinics charge separately for the scan and the plan, usually between €100 and €150. Once treatment starts, its price covers the check-ups, further scans and new aligners according to the plan. Retainers are required after every treatment. With Invisalign aligners they are paid for separately. With Angel aligners the first pair of retainers is free and later ones are discounted.

What aligners can treat

Aligners can treat any orthodontic problem that braces can treat:

• crowded and crooked teeth;
• protruding upper teeth;
• a protruding lower jaw;
• open bite, when the front teeth do not meet;
• deep bite, when the upper teeth cover the lower ones;
• crossbite;
• gaps between teeth;
• preparation for dental implants;
• and more.

In more complex cases the same techniques help as with braces, for example mini-screws and expanders. Some patients combine aligners with other treatment, such as an implant or a prosthesis. There are examples in the results just below.

Before we start, your teeth and gums need to be healthy. If there is inflammation, such as pulpitis or an abscess, we treat that first and then fit the aligners.

Aligners for children, teenagers and adults

Aligners for children

In children, treatment can start once the permanent front teeth have come through. At this age aligners make room for the teeth that have not come in yet. We work with Invisalign First aligners and Angel KiD aligners. This first phase usually takes about a year and a half, as with the child with severe crowding in the results above.

Aligners for teenagers

For teenagers, treatment is the same as for adults. Aligners are barely visible at school, and they come out for sport and meals. The most important thing is to wear them enough hours a day, and this is where parents help a lot.

Aligners for adults

At work aligners are barely visible, and after the first few days they do not affect your speech. If there are missing or damaged teeth, aligner treatment is combined with implants, crowns or veneers. First the aligners straighten the teeth and make room, then we place the implant or crown. Two of the cases above are exactly that: one with an implant, the other with prosthetics.

Aligners, braces or a removable appliance?

Besides aligners, teeth are straightened with braces or a removable appliance. Braces are small metal or ceramic brackets that are bonded to the teeth and connected with a wire. They stay on the teeth for the whole treatment. A removable appliance is a plastic plate with wires that is put in and taken out. It is used mostly in children, while the jaw is still growing.

Aligners handle the same cases as braces. The difference is in daily life: they are clear and come out for meals. That is why they are also called “invisible braces”.

At Deckoff Dental we treat with aligners only. Dr Deckoff has deliberately focused on one technique to master it as well as possible. Braces and removable appliances are in the table so you can compare them.

How treatment works

How long treatment takes depends on the case. In Dr Deckoff’s experience a standard aligner treatment takes 11 to 30 months, with some exceptions. You will know the exact time for your teeth once we have made the plan. More in the article how long aligner treatment takes.

Book a consultation

Deckoff Dental is at 41 Vladayska St., Sofia. We see patients by appointment only.

Book an appointment before you come. During opening hours there is always someone from the team at the clinic, but Dr Deckoff is there only part of the time and sees patients by appointment only. Aligner treatment sometimes means working outside these hours, so if the opening hours do not suit you, let us know and we will find another time. Book through SuperDoc or by phone.
