One of the most common questions patients ask is: “How long does aligner treatment (Invisalign) take?”
The answer is individual and depends on the patient’s age, the complexity of the case, and whether the aligners are worn consistently.
What determines the duration of aligner treatment?
1. Age of the patient
Younger patients usually respond faster to tooth movement. In adults, treatment is also effective but may take longer.
2. Case complexity
- Mild corrections – 4–6 months
- Moderate cases – 9–12 months
- Complex cases – 12–18 months or longer
The more severe the misalignment, the longer the treatment will take.
3. Discipline in wearing the aligners
Aligners must be worn 20–22 hours per day. If the patient removes them frequently, treatment may be extended by several months.

Is aligner treatment faster than braces?
Yes.
Aligners often provide shorter treatment times compared to braces because:
- tooth movement is digitally pre-planned in 3D software;
- each step is precise and predictable;
- fewer orthodontic visits are required
How many hours a day should aligners be worn?
For best results, aligners (including Invisalign) should be worn at least 20–22 hours per day. They should only be removed while eating and brushing teeth.

Average duration of Invisalign and other aligner treatments
- Mild cases: 4–6 months
- Moderate cases: about 12 months
- Complex cases: 18+ months
